We were invited to a behind-the-scenes look through the library in Zion National Park headquarters—a welcome invitation as mid-day temperatures exceed 100°.
The library serves as a resource to all park employees and the occasional private researcher (by request), providing books, historical documents, and newspaper clippings on a wealth of topics: flora and fauna, history of Utah and the Southwest, early explorers and pioneers, the earlier Paiute and Anasazi tribes, maps, engineering documents of park tunnels—just to name a few! Interpretive rangers often use the library to find information and inspiration for their own unique programs. Here they can find original notes, oral histories, and quotes from some of the park’s earliest characters.
We look forward to digging into some of the material we found during our visit to the library!
